Safety
What is CPSC and why does it matter?
CPSC is a federal agency known as Consumer Product Safety Commission. They have requirements for childrens’ toys and clothing much like the FDA has requirements for drugs, foods and cosmetics. CPSC’s mission according to their website is to “protect the public against unreasonable risks of injuries and deaths associated with consumer products.” So buying a compliant toy or clothing item means the maker/seller has been educated on and is following all regulations to ensure their product is safe for children to use.
Testing requirements. What are they?
Testing the various components of a finished product for withstanding compression, torque, tension and dropping for example, ensures that an item is safe for children to use and their health and safety are not put at risk. CPSC regulations do not require any testing for lead in natural fibers, such as wood, as the materials are not exposed to any lead in the manufacturing process.
How can I know if a small business is CPSC compliant?
Just ask! Those of us who’ve gone through the process are proud to let you know we’ve done what we need to do to be compliant and create safe products for your children. Most businesses will have a statement on their website or listing that says “Meets CPSC Safety Requirements,” although that is not a requirement.
If you have any further questions on the CPSC, please don’t hesitate to visit their website or reach out to me!
Thank you for supporting a small business!
